Our Vision

The Le Bons Bay Conservation Trust has been formed because of a strong desire from many local people to promote and enable the conservation of the local environment within the Bay.

Our initial specific vision is to purchase the 39 hectare Old Wharf Road property that forms a triangle of land running up Dalglish Rd from the bottom of the hill, up to the summit directly above the Le Bons bay beach, with the river being the bottom boundary.

Once the land is purchased by the Trust, we have some clear short, medium and long term goals.

In the short term we will:
  • Raise funds to purchase the old wharf road property.

  • Work with the Christchurch City Council to repair the old wharf road to the stage that it could be used as a walking and cycling track by the general public.

  • Place a Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust covenant over the land that would secure the property as a conservation block.

  • Secure the boundary fencing to make sure the property was free of stock.

  • Initiate a long term income from the property by registering the property for Carbon Credits.

  • Begin a native planting process in accessible areas on the block.

  • Work alongside Pest Free Banks Peninsula on sustainable pest eradication.

In the medium term we will:
  • Begin a native planting process in accessible areas on the block.

  • Remove the damaged and unusable house so it is no longer a hazard.

  • Create walking tracks over other parts of the Old Wharf Road Block.

In the longer term we will:
  • Maintain a native planting and pest eradication programme.

  • Build environmentally sustainable over-night accommodation based around the newer built DOC huts.

Our Logo

The three wave lines represent the past, present and future.

  • An acknowledgement of our ancestors who loved the land.

  • The current generation who are committed to making a difference.

  • The hope for the environment our future generations will inherit.
